Lesson from the Geese

A Donkey's Tale

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.

Finally he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway, it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. So he invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw.

With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!

Moral: Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up!

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
1. Free your heart from hatred.
2. Free your mind from worries.
3. Live simply
4. Give more.
5. Expect less.
Thins I've Lost
and Some I've Found
1. I've lost friends who were very close. But, I've also found new friends, and been reaquainted with old ones.
2. I've lost some of those things about which, I said "I will never ________, no matter how bad things get." I said I'd never pawn anything, I did. I said I'd never buy a Dodge Aries K, I did. I said I'd never eat raw oysters, but only once OK? I never had a list of things I wouldn't do, and I still eat raw oysters.
3. I've lost personal items, but nothing that compares with the boxes of memories that I've accumulated over the years.
4. I've lost people that I loved. Some died. Some moved. Some misunderstood. I learned more about some of these people after they were gone than when they were alive, and I will always cherish the memories of them, and the lessons I learned from them.
5. I've lost opportunities by the score. Opportunities for promotions. Opportunities for travel. Opportunities of a lifetime. I've had more opportunities that I could possibly take advantage of, so I had to choose.
6. I've lost time. I lost time working too much, too long, too hard . . . when I should have set that time aside for family, friends, and fun. The greatest investment of all is time invested in your kids. The dividends are astronomical.
7. I've lost my fire. It seems I used to get impassioned about issues. I've learned patience and wisdom in it's place.
8. I've lost my mind a few times. Fortunately, one of my friends found it, cleaned it off, and brought it back to me. Oddly, when I got it back, there was more wisdom in it.
9. I've lost my temper once or twice. Unfortunately, people that I love found it all too quickly. I've found that the best way to control my temper is to give it to God.
10. I've lost my perspective on life a few times. I eventually found that the living part was the most important part of life, not the achieving.
11. I've lost my fear of the "unknown" and found that my greatest fear is "not-knowing".
12. I've lost things that didnt' belong to me, and found out how much it cost to replace them. The cost was not always just money.
13. I've lost memories that were precious to me at the time, and you've helped my find some of them. Thank you.
What have you lost and found?
